CCTV－MTV音乐盛典首创于1999年，这台会聚了中国内地、港台和国际顶尖音乐人的盛大颁奖晚会，从第一年开始就迅速成为乐迷心中的著名品牌。2002年CCTV－MTV音乐盛典共设有25项大奖，这些奖项是对过去一年中国内地、港台地区音乐发展的一个回顾和总结。同时，“国际最佳艺人”等奖项的设置，也让中国乐迷有了评选和亲近自己心仪的国际大牌歌手的机会。
